STEAMPUNK - Just WTF is it?!!
STEAMPUNK ... noun: steampunk; noun: steam-punk
... a genre of science fiction that has a historical setting and typically features steam-powered machinery rather than advanced technology.
... a style of design and fashion that combines historical elements with anachronistic technological features inspired by science fiction.
Well, there you are, now you know what it means (just in case you didn’t already!).
You may be wondering, "What does that have to do with us?" (Alternately, you may not be!!)
Here at tykult.com we love the spirit, and the ingenuity, of the Steampunk community. With that in mind, we have created what we think are some of best Steampunk designs available. We put these on t-shirts, mugs, hoodies etc., just for you, so that you can show your Steampunk style anytime - anywhere! Even if you are not specifically into Steampunk, with these great designs, you will have something awesome to show off.
A lot of the ideas for Steampunk come from the Victorian Era where, "Steam was King".
People who are followers are often influenced by 19th century authors such as H. G. Wells, Mary Shelly, and Jules Verne. There are modern authors such as Mervyn Peake as well as Michael Moorcock and William Gibson and Bruce Sterling's novel. The Difference Engine (1990) is often credited with bringing about widespread awareness of Steampunk.
If you are interested in films, Brazil was a heavy cinematic influence on the genre. There is also 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Check out the trailers.
